BIOGRAPHY
Okahara’s work is deeply rooted in documentary practices, exploring social and political themes through the concept of Ibasyo, the Japanese idea of spaces where individuals can truly exist. His practice seamlessly merges meticulous craftsmanship with profound conceptual inquiry.
By crafting his own photo paper using traditional Japanese handmade materials, Okahara embraces the imperfections inherent in the hand-made process. These imperfections symbolize his recognition of the inherent limitations of any attempt to fully define the world. At the same time, they reflect his response to the overwhelming and vast themes of his recent projects—realities so immense that they can sometimes lose their sense of reality, often feeling intangible.
It is this intangibility that drives Okahara to engage deeply with his materials and processes, choosing methods that demand physical involvement. By creating every element of his work with his own hands, he seeks to grasp the intangible. This tactile process bridges the gap between the elusive themes he explores in his recent work and the material reality of his craft, anchoring his practice in something tangible and real.
